A Monumental Rehousing Effort at Catholic Charities of Acadiana
Since our humble beginnings in 1973, Catholic Charities of Acadiana has exhibited a commitment to preserving the dignity of the human person. Though Catholic Charities of Acadiana operates several emergency sheltering programs, it is important to note that being a client at an emergency shelter is not the end of the line. Living in a shelter is and should always be one step toward being permanently housed. Our work in assisting those who have experienced homelessness, some for decades, and helping them to regain housing is of utmost priority to the organization. After all, we consider safe and secure housing to be a human right.
This new year presents a great opportunity for us. A monumental opportunity. One that will change lives forever.
Due to a few factors that are now making more housing units available, Catholic Charities of Acadiana is preparing to rehouse as many as 95 households in the next 4 months.
Yes. We are planning to rehouse as many as 95 households and possibly way more individuals than that.
This is no easy task. It will take everything we have and the support of the community is crucial to the success of this effort. For instance, our average cost for rehousing is $1250 per household. This average price includes utility and security deposit, bed set, appropriate furniture, cleaning supplies, occasional appliances (ie. microwave), dishware, trash cans — All the things you need when you move into a new house.
Bed sets can be one of the biggest expenses.
As our clients move from their own experience of homelessness into this opportunity of a new life, we appeal to the community to affirm their human dignity and assist us in this monumental effort to end homelessness in Acadiana by sponsoring beds for our clients in their new homes.
Rehousing is always the goal. Thank you in advance for helping to provide beds for those who are starting over again.
