Press Release: FoodNet Food Bank Launches the One Extra Can Campaign to Collectively Fight Hunger Year-Round in Acadiana
FoodNet Food Bank is excited to announce the launch of the One Extra Can Campaign in partnership with local grocery stores, aiming to tackle the critical issue of empty collection bins at FoodNet Food Bank’s partner grocery stores. The campaign invites individuals across the region to make a simple yet impactful commitment: To purchase one extra can of non-perishable food during each shopping trip and place it in the designated collection baskets at participating grocery stores.
A program of Catholic Charities of Acadiana, FoodNet Food Bank is currently facing a significant challenge in providing for the growing number of families experiencing hunger in our community. With collection bins routinely empty, FoodNet Food Bank has been forced to spend upwards of $8,000 per week to purchase essential food items for the over 700 bags distributed weekly. The One Extra Can Campaign seeks to address this issue by encouraging individuals to make buying an extra can of food a habit on each trip to the grocery store, ensuring an increased availability of non-perishable food for those in need.
“The One Extra Can Campaign emphasizes the collective charitable impact of small actions,” said Ben Broussard, Chief of External Affairs for Catholic Charities of Acadiana. “While donating just one extra can of food may seem inconsequential, when multiplied by the number of caring individuals in our community, it can significantly increase FoodNet Food Bank's capacity to serve families experiencing food insecurity. Every can donated will help alleviate hunger, support struggling households, and provide an opportunity for individuals and families to thrive. By simply buying one extra can, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable families and children in Acadiana.”
Catholic Charities of Acadiana invites the community to embrace the One Extra Can Campaign by supporting participating grocery stores and donating through their FoodNet Food Bank collection baskets, located in the front of each store. By collectively making one additional purchase each shopping trip, Acadiana can empower FoodNet Food Bank to reach our goal of serving more families experiencing hunger.
Catholic Charities of Acadiana has served as an organizer of charity for the past 50 years. Catholic Charities of Acadiana cares for the sacred gift of all human life, especially the most vulnerable. Catholic Charities of Acadiana operates several programs that serve those currently experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty in Acadiana. Since 1973, its programs have represented a response to the Gospel call to carry out the corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, offering hospitality to the homeless, caring for the sick, visiting the imprisoned, and burying the dead.
