TIPS on INTERACTING directly WITH THOSE IN NEED

Catholic Charities of Acadiana acknowledges that churches, faith communities, schools, and community organizations are often on the front lines of receiving those in critical need. We believe a compassionate response is essential to living the Gospel we proclaim. We are so grateful to collaborate together with you to be the hands and feet of Jesus to our neighbor in need!

How to Engage with Those in Need

Encounter Attentively
Smile. Ask for a name. Listen actively. Receive with openness and without judgment.

Engage Compassionately
Be calm and positive. Show respect for the human dignity of the individual before you. Demonstrate compassion. Offer a drink or snack if appropriate. Be clear about how you can help. Be clear about how you cannot help and when a referral is necessary. Be direct while still being kind. Prioritize the self-directed action of the individual in need.

Pray Fervently
Our Catholic faith teaches us that human beings are composed of body and soul, and that through prayer we raise our hearts and minds to God. If the individual you are assisting would like prayer - pray aloud together. Pray for the individual in your personal prayer. Pray for the needs of those who experience suffering, poverty, or injustice in the context of prayer in your faith community.
